Roman's mission: hunt for exoplanets and clues about planetary formation, joining the storied ranks of Hubble and James Webb. Named after NASA's first chief of astronomy (who passed in 2018), Roman packs a 300-megapixel infrared camera that gives it Hubble's sharpness but with a field of view 100 times larger. Each image covers a sky patch 1.5 times the size of a full moon. Plus, it's got a coronagraph to block star glare, making planet photography a breeze.
NASA promises Roman will reveal 'giant worlds that are older, colder, and in closer orbits than the hot, young super-Jupiters' we've seen so far. It's heading to Lagrange point 2, a cosmic parking spot a million miles away, where it'll share Webb's orbit but keep its distance. Not a successor - more like a helpful overachiever that'll point Hubble and Webb to the good stuff while doing its own thing.
The telescope's panoramic views will 'uncover interesting targets' for Hubble to follow up on, and Webb can zoom in for ultra-sharp close-ups. Roman's first images won't arrive until early 2027 after months of calibration, but when they do, they'll be public immediately - because why hoard cosmic secrets? Its five-year mission (extendable to 10) will explore dark matter, dark energy, and exoplanets, basically everything from exploding stars to black holes.
Julie McEnery, NASA's senior project scientist, explained the motivation: 'The discovery that our universe is not just expanding, but that expansion is accelerating.' She likened it to throwing a ball up and watching it shoot away instead of falling back. 'There's something really fundamental that we don't understand about the nature of our universe itself, and Roman is purpose-built to address and provide the data we need.'
Of course, Trump tried to deep-six this project. A 2025 proposal called for 'extinction level cuts' to NASA's science budget, but Congress restored funding to $24.4 billion in January. Unfazed, the administration is trying again for 2027: a 23% cut to $18.8 billion overall, and a 46% slash to science, which the Planetary Society says would kill over 50 missions. Because why fund science when you can fund... something else?
Sunday's launch is also the final flight of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy, as Elon Musk phases it out (along with Falcon 9) to focus on Starship, his shiny new rocket for Mars. So this launch is a double farewell: a telescope that refused to die, and a rocket that's being retired before it could get a gold watch.
