Snails are basically tiny, shell-wearing chemists, and their slime is the product. This mucus is prized in skincare for its anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties, and snails have the audacity to secrete different kinds depending on the job. A team of German scientists has now cracked the recipe, and it's not as glamorous as you'd hope: collagen and calcium doing a little dance together. The findings were published in the journal Science.

Snail mucus is mostly water, with mucins (glycoproteins) and complex carbohydrates giving it that gooey feel. Beyond cosmetics, the stuff has potential for drug delivery. In 2020, scientists found that combining garden snail slime with gold nanoparticles helped heal wounds and reduce inflammation in mice. And in 2023, a study identified three distinct types of garden snail slime: a hydrating skin protector, an adhesive glue, and a lubricant for smooth gliding.

The new research focused on the grove snail, aka lemon snail (Cepaea nemoralis), which secretes five different mucus types with distinct functions. There's the lubricant for locomotion, the adhesive for sticking, and the epiphragm - a mucus layer with calcite that seals the shell during winter hibernation, protecting against predators and harsh weather. When disturbed, the snail also produces a sticky yellow mucus that's resistant to tearing, and a bubbly substance thought to smother or wash away small predators.

The researchers analyzed all five mucus types using proteomics, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, cryoscanning electron microscopy, and liquid chromatography. They found all share a similar protein composition, with collagen IV as the main structural component. The differences come from varying protein quantities and the addition of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC). The two defensive mucus types had the highest protein counts.

The authors concluded that these proteins 'tune the degree of cross-linking and therefore their network density, which has an immediate effect on their mechanical properties.' Each mucus type has a distinct, complex hierarchical structure influenced by how the mucus is processed. Calcium is 'actively secreted together with the mucus, serving as an ion source for cross-linking or a mineral precursor for reinforcement.'
