WASHINGTON - Northrop Grumman and the Canadian Space Agency have decided that the lunar Gateway, like so many ambitious projects before it, is so last year. This week, both announced they'll be adapting their Gateway work for a planned lunar base, though the specifics remain as hazy as a moon dust cloud.

Northrop Grumman, in an Aug. 4 announcement, revealed it will repurpose hardware and technologies from its HALO module - the Habitation and Logistics Outpost, for those not fluent in acronym - for a series of lander missions. The company is planning three Lunar Infrastructure Demo (LID) missions to the lunar surface, carrying power, data, and mechanical interfaces originally developed for Gateway. "By demonstrating how key surface assets can remain powered, protected and connected through lunar night and shadow, these missions will give NASA critical data to shape Artemis surface campaigns and long-duration lunar operations," the company declared, in a statement that could double as a mission statement for any number of space ventures.

David Schiller, vice president of civil space and sciences at Northrop, added: "Our ready-to-fly, reliable HALO technologies allow NASA to move faster, putting in place robust infrastructure that can endure the lunar night and establish a strong blueprint for a future Moon Base." Because nothing says 'ready-to-fly' like a last-minute pivot.

Notably, the announcement was light on details - no launch dates, no specific payloads. Just an artist's illustration showing three identical landers, each sporting different solar array configurations: one vertical, one circular (à la Cygnus), and one with a mystery payload. The caption promised the missions will "rapidly mature lunar surface power, thermal, autonomy, communications and hosted payload services that can survive the lunar night and scale into persistent infrastructure near the moon's south pole."

The timing was no accident: NASA released a broader update on its lunar base plans, focusing on other robotic lander missions and giving Northrop's plans a brief cameo. "NASA is working with Northrop Grumman to develop three technology demonstration payloads slated for delivery to the lunar surface," the agency said, noting that the focus would be on power and avionics systems from HALO "now being repurposed following NASA's shift from an orbital-focused lunar strategy to one centered on surface operations."

A Northrop spokesperson told SpaceNews on Aug. 4 that the first LID mission would launch in Phase One of NASA's Moon Base plans, which runs through 2029. The missions would be "NASA-funded," though the funding mechanism and cost remain as murky as the lunar regolith. NASA, in an Aug. 7 response, said it would fly the payloads on future Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) missions, all slated for Phase One. The agency added that contracting details are still being finalized - because what's a space program without a little paperwork?

The announcement didn't address whether Northrop might repurpose other HALO elements, like the module itself, which has suffered corrosion issues linked to supplier Thales Alenia Space. Earlier, CEO Kathy Warden hinted during a July 21 earnings call: "We are working with NASA to take the technology that we were developing under the HALO program and still have that contribute to their future Gateway plans... We are in the process of restructuring the contract to do that." Restructuring, the eternal dance of government contracts.

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) followed suit on Aug. 6, announcing a revamp of its Gateway contribution - the Canadarm3 robotic arm system. The technologies, the agency said, would be adapted for lunar applications and potential low Earth orbit commercial space stations. "Early deployment of robotics technologies on the moon is a key step in validating Canadian capabilities and positioning industrial expertise for future logistics activities on the lunar surface," the agency stated, adding that advancements from Canadarm3 could also create "new commercialization opportunities linked to emerging space stations."

MDA Space, the prime contractor for Canadarm3 under a contract worth 1 billion Canadian dollars ($717 million) awarded in 2024, is on board. In an Aug. 7 earnings call, CEO Mike Greenley expressed support for the pivot: "As the global effort to live and work on the moon builds momentum, MDA Space is in a strong position to expand our involvement in this endeavor." He acknowledged that designs are still in flux: "The teams continue to work on their designs and development, but the use of those designs and developments is the thing that's going through the adjustment at the moment."

Greenley also appreciated the shift: "We really appreciate Canada announcing its support for what we call the pivot, focusing on the lunar surface. We're going to work through that now in terms of contractually what that looks like, to make sure that all gets definitized properly as we go forward into the future." Because in space, as in contracting, the only constant is change - and the need to definitize it.
