The World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing this week offered a five-day spectacle that was equal parts triumph, tragedy, and slapstick comedy. With exploding pelvises, pratfalls worthy of Buster Keaton, and the occasional burst of ruthless violence, the event gripped the world with an unsettling blend of hilarity, trepidation, and relief.

The showcase was China's bold claim to humanoid robotics dominance, featuring android martial artists landing knockout roundhouse kicks and robot teams marching in behind captains astride giant robotic dogs. The blue-riband 100m sprint did not disappoint: robot sprinters outpaced Usain Bolt before slamming mindlessly into a padded wall in a blaze of sparks, flames, and flying mechanical limbs. In a 10-second clip perfect for viral consumption, international experts saw proof of China's "staggering" engineering progress - and comfort that these disintegrating robots might not yet be ready to overthrow humanity.

"Ready for another big day of fail," read a typical comment from millions who tuned into livestreams of events ranging from boxing to breakdancing. The humanoids displayed a jerky mix of ruthless effectiveness and pathetic failure. Some viewers felt unexpected empathy: one captioned a robot struggling through the 400m obstacle race, "after drinking 4 bottles of wine at 2 a.m." Another found a weightlifting contest "way more emotional than I expected."

The games' unofficial slogan might be: faster, higher, funnier. The obstacle course, with humanoids scrambling under nets, down stairs, and over stepping stones, reminded comedian Charlie Higson of Monty Python's Upper Class Twit of the Year sketch. He returned the next day, tweeting, "They get better and better," as a cheerleader robot with glittery pom-poms flailed about like it was having a fit.

But the games were not just for entertainment. Involving over 2,000 humanoids from more than 660 mostly domestic tech companies, they were a propaganda flex ahead of President Xi Jinping's summit with Donald Trump in Washington DC, where tech supremacy will be high on the agenda. Last month, Trump banned imports of Chinese humanoids and robot dogs, citing cyber and national security concerns. The event also aimed to boost global sales of Chinese robots as US rivals like Elon Musk's Optimus humanoid reportedly went into production this month. China produced 12,800 humanoids last year, about 90% of the global total, according to the Mercator Institute for Chinese Studies - a dominance that perhaps emboldened China to broadcast its comic failures so candidly.

For the Chinese Communist Party, humanoids are a priority, offering solutions to a demographic crunch, rising military ambitions, and a desire to tighten surveillance. Beijing is seeding hundreds of companies to create a survival-of-the-fittest dynamic, with the games imposing a hard deadline for progress. Xi's latest five-year plan, approved in March, pledges to boost robotics, accelerate the "practical application of … humanoid robots," and explore "embodied AI in roles experiencing labour shortages or high-risk environments," which likely include war. The military potential worried some onlookers.

"Fascinating, and honestly, a little scary," said Arun Bothra, a senior police officer in India, which shares a tense border with China. "Watching robots run, play football and compete like humans is one thing. Seeing them on borders someday, carrying guns and making decisions, will be something else entirely." Another viewer, watching a humanoid hoist a barbell, concluded: "Humanity is preparing its own end."

China isn't alone in pursuing robotic warfare - Ukraine staged a military parade in Kyiv entirely of robotic weaponry. But the crashes and fits in the speed skating arena revealed that China is advancing humanoid bodies faster than their minds. "The progress they have made from last year is staggering," said Thrishantha Nanayakkara, professor of robotics at Imperial College London. "Everything seems to be coming together …. by 2030, it will be a very different world."

The fastest sprinter, Tiangong Ultra, completed the 100m more than twice as fast as last year, while the peak standing jump rose from 0.96m to 3.40m. Liquid cooling has boosted motor torque, creating more powerful movements. "This execution is incredible," said Ingo Keller of the National Robotarium at Heriot-Watt University. "You would not have expected the speed of development. [But] does it move the goalpost in utilising humanoids? Not necessarily."

Experts stress the robots are specialists, not generalists: fast runners or good boxers, not both, because AI models can't yet process the physical world's full complexity. The industry awaits a "ChatGPT moment" - when humanoid tech becomes generally useful and mainstream. By one definition, that's when a robot can succeed at 80% of tasks in an unfamiliar home via voice or text commands. The event coincided with a sobering speech from Wang Xingxing, founder of Unitree, who said it could be a decade before that moment. "Humanoids are not yet capable enough for mass deployment," he said, citing AI model limitations as the biggest bottleneck. His company's share price has oscillated wildly since listing in Shanghai.

Georg Stieler, a consultant advising multinationals on robots, saw little progress in autonomy in Beijing. Some Chinese robotics companies privately complained about a lack of funding for commercial long-term pilot projects "to do something useful in a factory." "It's not so difficult to make a stunt, which people will share on LinkedIn or X," Stieler said. "The major challenge is to do something that's really useful."

Dexterity remains a challenge, with little focus on events like power tool assembly, powder weighing, bottle opening, cap prying, box unpacking, and tweezer bean-picking. In one brief moment, a humanoid struggled to pick up a small object from a table and spilled water in a pouring challenge - before the cameras panned away to a martial artist carving the air with kicks.
