Katalyst Space Technologies, the company that built a spacecraft to give a NASA observatory a boost, has announced it's making progress in fixing its own spacecraft's spinning problem. The drama, which could be its own reality TV show, began when the Link spacecraft entered a 'multi-axis spin' on July 28, shortly after its July 3 launch on a Pegasus rocket. The company claims it has slowed the spin from a dizzying 9 degrees per second to a more manageable 1.47 degrees per second, using an electric thruster and consuming less than 100 grams of fuel. That's the good news. The bad news? Two of the three reaction wheels are dead, and the reaction control system thrusters are only partially functional. But hey, who needs reaction wheels when you have pluck and a can-do attitude? Katalyst plans to upload a 'significant flight software update' in the coming days to regain attitude control, and they're still aiming to reach the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory by late August, just a few weeks behind schedule. The mission, which costs $30 million, is Katalyst's first attempt to grapple another satellite and boost its orbit. NASA, ever the optimist, acknowledges the high risk but sees benefits for the agency and the industry. Without Link, the 22-year-old Swift spacecraft will deorbit late this year or early next year, as it lacks the ability to raise its own orbit. The reboost must start before Swift dips below 300 kilometers, a threshold expected no earlier than October. As of Aug. 9, Swift was just below 350 kilometers. So, no pressure.
