According to the latest Retail Prices Index from Statistics Jersey, inflation for pensioner households on the island has hit 4.7%, up from 3.8% in June 2025 and well above the headline rate of 2.8%. The main culprit? Heating oil and other fuels, which soared 53.5% over the year. Because nothing says "golden years" like choosing between warmth and food. Domestic services like gardening and cleaning also rose 14.8%, presumably because the garden gnomes demanded a raise.

Overall inflation inched up from 2.7% in March to 2.8% in June, matching the UK's CPIH measure. Household services led the charge with a 5.6% increase, contributing 0.6 percentage points to the annual rate. Food prices kept climbing too: lamb up 12.7%, milk products up 11.8%, and eggs up 8.7% - making a simple omelette feel like a luxury investment. Motoring costs rose 4.5%, while fuel and light prices jumped 9.9%, thanks to ongoing global energy market jitters driven by the conflict involving Iran. Low-income households fared slightly better with a 3.6% inflation rate, but that's still cold comfort when your heating bill is on fire.
