Midjourney, the AI lab that brought us those uncanny images and videos generated by large language models, has decided that what its product lineup really needed was astrology. The company has acquired Co-Star, a social astrology app with about 4.3 million monthly active users, according to Bloomberg. Deal terms were not disclosed, presumably because the stars didn't align for transparency.

Co-Star, for the uninitiated, helps users generate astrological birth charts and then share them with friends, because nothing says social bonding like comparing your Mercury retrogrades. The app uses a blend of AI and actual humans to write horoscopes, compatibility assessments, and other cosmic advice based on your astrological data.

Midjourney is clearly casting a wide net. The company is practically synonymous with its Discord server - there's no stand-alone Midjourney app - yet it's also dabbling in a medical arm and a spa. An astrology app fits right in with that eclectic portfolio. Co-Star's team of two dozen employees has joined Midjourney, bringing their consumer app experience. Maybe, just maybe, this will finally push Midjourney to release a stand-alone app. Or maybe they'll just add a birth chart generator to the Discord bot. Stay tuned.
