In the misty highlands of Mahabaleshwar, western India, farmers are engaged in a high-stakes gamble with a very delicious payoff: strawberries. This region, perched over 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level, is home to roughly 85% of India’s strawberry cultivation, thanks to a cool November-to-March growing season and soil that drains better than your smartphone battery.
But make no mistake - this isn’t a pastoral idyll. It's a labor-intensive, weather-dependent crapshoot. "If you have a field full of strawberries and sudden heavy rains hit, the entire crop is ruined," says Sheetal Danavle, who with her husband grows strawberries on half of their three-acre farm. Every year, they shell out $2,500 (£1,900) for young plants, because strawberries don’t grow from seed. "If the season goes well, you can earn double your investment. But the climate makes it a huge gamble," she adds, in what might be the understatement of the horticultural year.
Despite the risks, thousands of farmers in Mahabaleshwar make strawberries one of the most profitable crops in western India. But here's the rub: the industry is utterly dependent on imported varieties from California, Florida, Italy, and Spain. No one in India has bothered to develop a domestic plant - largely because it takes 10 to 15 years and a lot of patience, which is in short supply. Foreign breeders patent their varieties, so Indian propagators like Nelson Sequeira, founder and director of Tara Farms Fresh, must import certified mother plants. These plants go through government quarantine, then are placed in nurseries where each mother plant shoots out runners to produce an average of 20 daughter plants - or 30 to 40 for advanced growers. It’s a high-tech operation: plants never touch the ground, instead resting in split industrial pipes packed with coco-peat substrate derived from coconut husk, with a precise drip-irrigation and fogging system controlling micro-climates. Very fancy. Very imported.
But change is on the horizon, and it involves radiation. Not the comic-book kind, but controlled, low-dose gamma irradiation on plant tissues at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV), an agricultural university in Maharashtra, in partnership with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). The goal, according to Dr. Darshan Shashank Kadam, assistant professor of Horticulture at MPKV, is to "fast-track the development of India's first indigenous, climate-resilient strawberry cultivar that matches the large fruit size and firm texture of foreign varieties while natively tolerating Indian heatwaves." Dr. Kadam admits it could take 10 to 15 years - so don’t hold your breath. In the meantime, they’re helping farmers with scientific packages of practices, standardizing planting schedules, fertilizer recommendations, and growth regulator applications for Mahabaleshwar conditions.
Meanwhile, larger farms are diving into hydroponics, which is both a blessing and a curse. Ketan Yashwant Sodha, founder and CEO of Berry Fresh Agrotech, started with open-field farming but got tired of watching his crops get destroyed by rain. "For the past 10 years, it has consistently rained in India during our peak season - November, December, and the first week of January. When you are in an open field and your plantation is at its absolute peak, a single rain will ruin your entire crop," he laments. So in 2022, he switched to hydroponics, a soilless, covered cultivation method that controls water, nutrients, light, and temperature. It wasn't easy - "I suffered immense losses and failed multiple times," he says. "The soil is forgiving; hydroponics does not forgive. If you make a mistake today, you will wake up tomorrow morning to a disaster - and the recovery time in hydroponics takes twice as long as soil." But now his team has trialed 19 different varieties, including rare Japanese ones, and they're the only ones in India trialing a specific Netherlands variety this season. By limiting each plant to 750ml of water a day, they produce "rich, highly concentrated sugars and aromas instead of water-logged, bland fruits." They even run regular "blood work" on crops - laboratory testing of leaves and petioles to measure nutrient uptake. And with a semi-open polyhouse, strawberries grow year-round. "It's not a seasonal fruit for us," Sodha says, adding that they're now talking to investors to expand to a five-acre facility with 200,000 plants.
But for small farmers, such high-tech solutions are either out of reach or a massive risk. Sheetal Danavle and her husband tried hydroponics in 2017. "The experiment was 100% successful and the fruits we grew were entirely organic. It saved us a lot of labour, the workers didn't have to constantly bend down or prune, and it saved us a lot of money on medicines and field manure." Then a massive cyclone hit Mahabaleshwar and knocked down the entire setup. "Then we did not have the courage to set it up again," she says. So she went back to traditional farming, but with a modern twist: she became a social media influencer, posting videos about growing strawberries and inviting tourists to visit her farm, pick fruit, and buy directly. "This has helped cut the middle man, and make more profit. So, now I am an influencer and entrepreneur."
And what about the future? There's AI in the fields, believe it or not. Krishan Bhilare, whose family has farmed strawberries for generations, is part of a Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) network. They've installed weather-monitoring towers at four strategic locations, using AI to analyze weather data and predict rain. Farmers can then delay spraying crops, saving expensive chemicals from being washed away. The FPO is also building vertical towers where strawberries grow five layers deep on coco-peat substrate. "By stacking five pots into a single vertical tower, we can scale our density from 25,000 plants to 125,000 plants per acre," says Bhilare. That's five times the production on the same land. But such investments are either beyond small farms or a huge risk - as Danavle learned the hard way.
So, India's strawberry industry is at a crossroads: keep importing foreign varieties, wait a decade for homegrown mutants, or go high-tech and hope the weather cooperates. Or, you know, just become an influencer. As the article notes, AI is "not smart" - but it might help you dodge a rainstorm. And if all else fails, there's always the option of growing strawberries in your living room under a UV lamp. But that's a story for another day.
