The research, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found improvements in physical function, pain, mental health, sleep quality, and even bone mineral density.

With more than 1.7 billion people worldwide suffering from musculoskeletal conditions - which, fun fact, are the leading contributor to disability globally, with low back pain being the single biggest cause of disability in 160 countries - this isn't exactly niche news. These conditions limit mobility and dexterity, leading to early retirement, lower wellbeing, and reduced societal participation. So, you know, slightly important.

The umbrella review, conducted by researchers at hospitals and universities in China, pooled data from 92 systematic reviews covering 1,744 randomised controlled trials. That's a lot of evidence, and the findings are robust: 'high certainty evidence' that traditional Chinese exercises - including tai chi, qigong, baduanjin, wuqinxi, and yijinjing - improve health outcomes for people with musculoskeletal disorders.

Specifically, the exercises improved movement in knee osteoarthritis, mental health in neck pain and knee osteoarthritis, and sleep quality in fibromyalgia. Tai chi, in particular, significantly eased chronic pain and stiffness while increasing bone mineral density in those with osteopenia or osteoporosis. The sweet spot? Doing these exercises for more than six months, at least three times a week, for a total of at least 150 minutes per week. So, basically, a gym membership you won't abandon by February.

The researchers concluded that this 'definitive, high-level evidence synthesis' supports traditional Chinese exercises as effective interventions, and they suggest these should be included in clinical guidelines and rehabilitation programmes worldwide. They're 'safe, accessible, and cost-effective,' and could complement conventional therapies, reduce reliance on drugs, and empower patients in self-management.

Given that musculoskeletal conditions are on the rise due to global population growth and ageing, the researchers suggest that promoting these exercises in community and primary care settings could be a strategic part of public health initiatives aimed at healthy ageing and chronic disease prevention.
