In 2024, an interdisciplinary team of social and marine scientists decided to check whether marine heatwaves - those prolonged ocean temperature spikes that climate change keeps serving up like unwanted encore performances - might be messing with child and maternal health on land. Lead researcher Clark Gray, a human geographer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was skeptical. “I was very ready to find nothing,” he said, probably while adjusting his monocle of scientific caution.

Well, surprise! The report, published this month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that for every standard deviation increase in marine heatwaves over a 24-month period - roughly three extra heatwaves - child mortality jumps by 5.4 percent. Child wasting and stunting, the unlovely hallmarks of malnutrition, rise by 6.5 and 8.8 percent, respectively. So, hot oceans, hungry kids. The climate crisis: it's the gift that keeps on taking.

The researchers focused on low- and middle-income countries, so before you start feeling too smug, know that this is a correlation, not a causation. The authors aren't entirely sure why or how ocean warming translates into child malnutrition. Marine heatwaves can disrupt oceanic food chains, possibly killing off fish and shellfish that coastal communities rely on. But other culprits, like terrestrial heatwaves or mosquito-borne diseases, could also be pulling their weight in this grim game of Clue.

Katy Seto, an associate professor of environmental studies at UC Santa Cruz, called the research important, if only as a “first pass at understanding for whom this could be a big problem and what the solutions might be.” Translation: we know something's wrong, but we haven't quite figured out the who, what, and how. Her colleague Gray noted that the findings align with existing research on warming and health: “It really shows up pretty much everywhere on every outcome.” Consistent negativity - now that's a trend we could do without.

To narrow things down, the authors grouped countries by their reliance on small-scale fishing. Unsurprisingly, the negative effects were concentrated in those nations. Industrial fishing operations can dodge heatwaves by steaming further out to sea, while small-scale fishers are stuck with whatever the ocean throws at them. But Seto pointed out that even this doesn't fully explain the health declines - those catches might be traded, not eaten, so marine heatwaves could be hurting incomes rather than diets directly.

Oceans absorb most of the planet's excess heat, but marine heatwaves themselves are complex, three-dimensional events that haven't gotten as much attention as, say, sea-surface temperature rises or ocean acidification. Still, with ocean temperatures at record highs, some conclusions are inevitable.
