Amazon has demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity and common sense by barring a breastfeeding boss from an in-person business course because she wanted to bring her 20-week-old baby along. Rachel Bews, a business owner, had informed Amazon a week ahead of the event at their Dunfermline warehouse that she would need to bring her child due to breastfeeding. She was told over the phone on the train to the event that children under six are not allowed on site.

Amazon apologized, sort of, saying: "We sincerely apologise to Ms Bews that our site access policy was not communicated clearly before she travelled... This is a long-standing health and safety policy that applies to all visitors and employees." The company also noted they are "reviewing our communications process to prevent this from happening again" - which is corporate speak for "we'll send the email earlier next time."

Bews, who could have used a lactation room at the event to express milk, pointed out she hadn't planned for that and that not every breastfed baby takes a bottle. She missed out on "the most important things" - networking over coffee and lunch - which is the real tragedy here.

For those returning to work and wanting to breastfeed, the NHS recommends telling your employer. Amazon might want to take notes.
