In a revelation that will shock absolutely no one who has seen the news this summer, a new study has found that wildfires in Europe are projected to burn 39% more land by the end of the century, even in the best-case scenario for stopping the planet from heating up. The catch? We actually have to do something about it.

The study, led by Maik Billing of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), looked at how hot, dry, and windy weather - the trifecta that turns a small campfire mishap into a continent-wide barbecue - will expand across Europe as carbon pollution pushes temperatures higher. In the worst-case scenario, with global heating hitting 3.6C above preindustrial levels, the burnt area would nearly triple. Because apparently, we're aiming for 'well-done' on a planetary scale.

But here's the twist: improvements in fire management could reduce those increases by more than 70%, the researchers found. Not eliminate them, mind you, just make them slightly less apocalyptic. As Billing put it, "Fire management cannot replace climate mitigation." In other words, you can't just slap a fire extinguisher on a climate crisis and call it a day.

The research arrives as Europe's fire season is shaping up to be the third-worst on record, behind 2025 and 2022, according to the European Forest Fire Information Service. Over 600,000 hectares have already burned, with Belgium, France, and Slovakia setting records for this time of year. The UK, Belgium, and Germany have joined the usual suspects - France, Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Greece - in the conflagration club.

The researchers compared projected burnt area for 2070-2100 with models from 2000-2030 and found that the increase in fire weather was the primary driver. In the optimistic scenario, with heating capped at 1.8C (a mere 0.4C above current levels), some regions see moderate increases while others stay relatively calm. In the pessimistic scenario, with 3.6C of heating, virtually all of Europe experiences worsening fire weather. Current policies, by the way, are on track for about 2.6C - the 'Goldilocks' zone of climate catastrophe, but not in the good way.

But wait, there's more! The study also modeled improvements in firefighting, using the Human Development Index as a proxy for firefighting ability (because nothing says 'fire suppression' like a good education system). These improvements could reduce burnt area by 92% in the cooler scenario compared to keeping firefighting at today's levels. However, the authors acknowledge that mega-fires make it hard to extrapolate from past experience. And here's the kicker: a separate study earlier this month found that aggressive fire suppression since the 1980s has paradoxically increased fuel loads, leading to fewer but more ferocious fires. So, our efforts to put out small fires are literally fueling bigger ones. You can't make this stuff up.

In late July, monster fires in France and Spain forced a third of a million people from their homes, with blazes too powerful for firefighters to extinguish. Víctor Resco de Dios, a forestry engineer at the University of Lleida who wasn't involved in the study, pointed out that the fire season often brings an "unproductive blame game" - focusing on one factor while ignoring the other. But as he astutely noted, "The problem of wildfires wouldn't be worsening if we were heading towards an ice age - instead of global warming." And it would be largely mitigated if our landscapes were like a century ago, with much smaller forest areas. So, the solution is clear: either stop climate change, or chop down all the trees.
