Elon Musk has a plan to solve AI's power grid bottleneck: build the hard-to-make turbine parts himself. Because nothing says 'sustainable future' like a secret foundry in Texas cranking out gas turbine blades.
On Saturday, Musk confirmed what a secret SpaceX foundry in Bastrop, Texas, is for, after The Information published a report citing job listings for a 'blades and vanes foundry' and due diligence specialist Corey Trinetti's discovery that SpaceX bought roughly 830 acres near its existing Starlink factory between March and June.
'SpaceX and Tesla are each building 100GW/year of solar production capacity as fast as possible,' Musk wrote on X, 'but natural gas will still be needed to supplement and bootstrap solar for several years. The limiting factor for nat gas turbine production is casting the blades & vanes. By doing in-house casting at SpaceX, we can accelerate nat gas turbines coming online by up to 18 months, which is a profound game-changer.'
The game, of course, is AI infrastructure. GPU shortages are still a thing - Nvidia's Blackwell chips have lead times of several months - but the real bottleneck is now the physical power grid. The International Energy Agency projects global data center electricity use will roughly double by 2030, and GE Vernova says it's sold out of turbine production capacity through 2030, largely thanks to AI demand.
So hyperscalers like Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft are all building private gas-fired plants next to data centers, sidestepping the grid and their own climate pledges. It's almost like they're in a hurry.
Now, about those turbine blades: inside a gas turbine's hottest section, they run at 3,000 to 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit - about 800 degrees hotter than the melting point of the alloy they're made from. They survive thanks to internal cooling channels, thermal-barrier coatings, and the fact that each blade is cast as a single, unbroken crystal, grown slowly in a vacuum furnace without microscopic seams. Only four companies worldwide have mastered this at industrial scale, and they're all tapped out.
If SpaceX pulls it off, Musk's empire gains a manufacturing capability that every other AI builder depends on a tiny oligopoly for. But it also means more gas turbines coming online fast, and those turbines are already drawing lawsuits and health concerns.
In Memphis, where SpaceXAI has run gas turbines for its Colossus data centers since 2024, the NAACP has accused the company of operating without required permits or pollution controls. The turbines emit smog-forming compounds and hazardous chemicals like formaldehyde, linked to asthma, respiratory disease, and certain cancers. The site sits near neighborhoods already burdened by industrial pollution, and University of Memphis researchers found air pollution grew 'slightly worse' because of the data center.
Memphis is just the most visible case. In Virginia's 'Data Center Alley,' a study for the Piedmont Environmental Council using the EPA's COBRA model found emissions from one facility's eight gas turbines could reach over 2.5 million people, causing an estimated 3.4 to 6.5 premature deaths per year and $53 million to $99 million in annual health damages.
So yes, Musk's foundry might accelerate AI's power supply by 18 months. But the cost - in pollution, health, and lawsuits - might be a game-changer of a different sort.
