Lucid Motors spent this week doing the electric vehicle equivalent of screaming 'I'm fine!' while the stock price plummeted like a lead balloon. The luxury EV maker was forced to fend off bankruptcy rumors after a report claimed restructuring firm AlixPartners had advised its board to consider Chapter 11. Lucid called the report 'completely false' and pointed to its free cash flow as proof it can survive into next year. But the damage was done: shares tanked as much as 50% in one of the worst single-day drops in company history, and the panic spread to rivals Rivian and Polestar, whose shares also took a hit.
The trouble began Tuesday when EV trade publication EV (whose URL is 'eletric-vehicle.com', because typos are apparently a branding choice) reported that AlixPartners had suggested Lucid consider bankruptcy or a take-private deal. Lucid confirmed it hired AlixPartners but denied the recommendations, saying the firm would advise on 'improving execution, strengthening operations and positioning Lucid to realize the full potential of its technology, products and innovation.' The company then filed a cease and desist order against EV, claiming the report caused 'serious injury to a number of investors.'
Still, the timing was terrible. Lucid lost over $1 billion in Q1 2026, conducted two rounds of layoffs (12% in February, 18% in June), reduced production at its Arizona factory, and eliminated COO Marc Winterhoff's position. So while the bankruptcy rumor may be false, the company's health is far from robust. The episode highlights the precarious position of EV-only automakers facing slowing demand, policy whiplash, and investor jitters. Rivian is betting big on the mass-market R2, Polestar is tangled in Chinese ownership issues, and all three rely heavily on deep-pocketed backers - Lucid on Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Polestar on Geely, and Rivian on Volkswagen. If those big wallets get cold feet, the all-electric future might be more distant than ever.
