Certain clouds are acting up - appearing more often and lower in the sky than they used to. To figure out what's driving these changes (like shifts in Earth's long-term weather patterns), scientists launched the NASA-supported Space Cloud Watch project, asking people worldwide to snap and submit fresh images of these troublemakers. Now, one volunteer has built a nifty tool to help fellow cloud watchers work smarter, not harder.

The misbehaving clouds in question are "noctilucent" or "night-shining" clouds (NLCs). These high-altitude show-offs scatter sunlight long after sunset and long before sunrise, giving them a silvery glow. But despite their luminous flair, they're surprisingly easy to confuse with lower-altitude look-alikes. That confusion has been a headache for project leaders, who had to manually verify submissions.

Enter volunteer Namai Chandra, who noticed the manual verification grind and thought, "This feels like a job for a human-in-the-loop machine learning pipeline - one that can handle repetitive screening automatically while keeping human judgment for the images that matter most." In other words, Namai found a way to help observers confirm whether they're actually seeing NLCs or just some sky impostors.

Namai reached out to Space Cloud Watch scientists Drs. Chihoko Cullens and Brentha Thurairajah, who were thrilled with the idea. He then developed a machine learning pipeline, training it on a variety of cloud images, including both NLCs and the lower-altitude look-alikes frequently submitted to the project. The pipeline combines image pre-screening, cloud classification, and confidence-based review routing. After several rounds of development, testing, and refinement, he released his NLC identification tool to the project. Now it's being used by cloud contributors unsure if they've spotted NLCs, as well as project scientists who want to flag images for review.
