In a development that surprises absolutely no one who has ever met a functional family, a 66-year-old widow has announced she's had it with being the family's unpaid emotional and financial support system. The woman, the middle of three siblings, is reportedly the only one who graduated high school and college, the only one who hasn't spent time in jail, and the only one with a successful career and comfortable retirement. Her siblings? Struggling with mental health, financial issues, or both. The final straw? Her older sister accidentally texted her intimate pictures meant for her new boyfriend. Because nothing says 'I respect your boundaries' like unsolicited nudes.

Annalisa Barbieri, the Guardian's advice columnist, consulted psychoanalytic psychotherapist Susanna Abse, who diagnosed the situation with the clinical term 'survivor guilt.' Apparently, when one sibling does well, they sometimes feel guilty, as if their success somehow caused their siblings' struggles. Which is, of course, completely irrational, but then again, so is the idea that you can fix your siblings' lives by enabling them. Abse suggests the woman might be suffering from a touch of omnipotence, believing she can make her siblings better. Spoiler: she can't. The advice is to step back, accept her limitations, and mourn the family she wishes she had. Also, to stop rescuing people who will only end up poisoning her loving feelings. Love them for who they are, from a safe distance.

Barbieri adds that resentment is a useful emotion - it's your mind's way of saying, 'You're doing too much, you idiot.' When you feel resentful, stop, look, and learn, then try not to repeat the behavior. Divorce from family isn't really possible, unless you have no other relatives who will keep you in the loop. So instead, refocus on the people who were there for you when you were widowed. You deserve to be looked after, too. And repeat after me: 'I am not responsible for my siblings.' It's not easy, but it gets easier with practice, much like avoiding accidentally texting your siblings your nudes.
