Volkswagen's China-exclusive Jetta brand has unveiled a new concept SUV at the Beijing Auto Show, proving that in some markets, a name is just a suggestion. The Jetta X concept previews the brand's pivot into electrified vehicles, a far cry from the compact gasoline sedan familiar to North American drivers.

Since becoming a standalone marque in 2019 under the Volkswagen Group's joint venture, Jetta has focused on budget-friendly gasoline sedans and SUVs. That strategy is officially getting a software update. The brand plans to launch four "New Energy Vehicles" by 2028, a Chinese market category encompassing both fully electric and plug-in hybrid models, with the first expected as early as this year.

Technical specs for the Jetta X are currently as elusive as a straightforward car-buying experience, but it's described as fully electric. The real reveal is in the styling, which trades suburban commuter for off-road aspirant. The concept features slim LED lights set in a wide horizontal opening, a sculpted bumper with a skid plate, and the pièce de résistance: red tow hooks. Because nothing says "affordable EV" like decorative recovery points.

This shift is part of Volkswagen's broader strategy to rewire its approach in China, emphasizing electrification and localized products. For the Jetta brand, it's a necessary attempt to stay on the radar in a market where demand for affordable EVs and plug-in hybrids, especially among younger buyers, is growing faster than a queue at a charging station.
