In a move that had all the drama of a reality TV finale, Coalition MPs crossed the floor in protest against the gambling bill, while the Greens leader suggested Labor might want to invest in some industrial-strength shame. The government, in a bid to seem reasonable, agreed to more than a dozen amendments made with the Coalition. Because nothing says 'we're serious about gambling reform' like a bipartisan amendment-a-thon.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers, ever the optimist, called the amendments 'very substantial changes' and assured us the opt-out register will be revenue neutral. That's right, folks: the gambling industry will cover the costs. Because who better to fund responsible gambling measures than the very people profiting from it? Chalmers also promised it'll be 'much easier for people to opt out of this advertising' and for the regulator to enforce rules around inducements. We're sure the regulator is thrilled to have more homework.
Meanwhile, in the aged care corner, Chalmers acknowledged the reforms have 'made everything worse for older Australians' - a stunning admission that's about as surprising as finding out the sky is blue. He noted the government has 'a lot to do to fix the implementation of these once-in-a-generation reforms' that 'could have and should have' been what they were intended to be. But hey, at least they're aware.
And if you thought the algorithm woes were limited to aged care, think again. Chalmers expressed 'very serious concerns' about automation being transferred to the NDIS, pointing out that 250,000 older Australians were reassessed under aged care. He wondered aloud if we're talking about 750,000 Australians with disability needing reassessment, and if the NDIS uses an algorithm 'as botched as the one we've got in aged care,' we should all be worried. We're just hoping the algorithm doesn't start reassessing people's life choices.
