Michigan is betting $7.5 million that the ground beneath it isn't just dirt and disappointment. The state is funding research into geologic hydrogen - a clean energy source that, when burned, produces only water. That's right: no greenhouse gases, no harmful pollutants, just a refreshing glass of H2O and a warm fuzzy feeling of decarbonization.

Kevin Mehren, director of the Michigan Infrastructure Office, is practically giddy about the potential. Geologic hydrogen, he says, is 'a major decarbonization tool, I think one of the strongest that we have come across.' It could help clean up Michigan's high-emissions industries like trucking, steel, and cement manufacturing - because let's face it, those sectors aren't exactly winning any green awards.

The excitement stems from a 2025 U.S. Geological Survey study that mapped potential hydrogen hotspots, with Michigan ranking high. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, presumably not one to ignore a good geological map, directed state resources into research in January. And now, here we are, with $7.5 million to answer the burning question: Is it there? Can we access it? And can it be the energy savior we've been hoping for?

Drilling for geologic hydrogen is already happening in Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa - states also on the USGS's good list. Michigan wants in on the action, and it has a geological story to tell. The state sits atop the Midcontinent Rift, where North America started splitting apart over 1 billion years ago but then, in a classic case of cold feet, stopped. This created the Michigan Basin, with younger rocks in the middle and deeper, older rocks - where hydrogen might lurk - near the edges, conveniently close to urban areas like Detroit and Traverse City.

Brian Ellis, an associate professor at the University of Michigan and co-director of its hydrogen research program, points out that existing oil and gas wells in northern Michigan could be repurposed for hydrogen hunting. 'We haven't typically been looking for hydrogen in the past when we've drilled these wells,' he says, 'so there's opportunity to potentially data-mine information that we already have and see if there's hydrogen.' It's like finding out your old filing cabinet might contain winning lottery tickets.

Ellis hopes state money can attract federal funding. The U.S. Department of Energy set aside about $20 million in 2024 for geologic hydrogen projects through its ARPA-E program. He sees this as a 'high-risk, high-reward opportunity' that the feds should support. And despite the Trump administration's cold shoulder to clean energy, experts think this research might just fit the bill. After all, it involves drilling - and 'drill, baby, drill' is a phrase dear to the administration's heart, even if it's for zero-emission energy.

Mehren sees geologic hydrogen as a rare bipartisan unicorn. 'You are ostensibly drilling - 'drill, baby, drill' is the catchphrase they use - for zero-emission energy,' he says. 'It's a domestic resource, but you are providing a new clean resource that could be an economic driver, decarbonize industry, [and] help fight climate change.' So, whether you're a climate hawk or a fossil fuel fanatic, there's something to like about hydrogen hiding under the Mitten State. Now, if only we could get it out of the ground without too much fuss.
