New Australian research has finally explained why walking becomes a slow, exhausting chore with age: your body is quietly trading speed and efficiency for the thrill of not falling over. The findings, led by researchers at Flinders University and the University of Canberra, suggest that aging brings a "safety-first" walking strategy that prioritizes stability over performance - because apparently, staying upright is more important than getting anywhere quickly.
The study analyzed movement data from 107 healthy adults aged 26 to 86 and found small but meaningful age-related differences in how the ankle and its surrounding muscles handle each step. Lead author Dr. Cody Lindsay, a sport and exercise technology expert at the Flinders Caring Futures Institute, notes that the ankle is crucial for both balance and forward propulsion. As we age, the body starts favoring stability, which keeps us upright but makes walking more of an effort - like a cautious driver who brakes at every green light.
The researchers found that older adults are more likely to activate opposing muscles around the ankle simultaneously, a pattern known as co-contraction. This stiffens the ankle joint, improving stability when the foot hits the ground, but it also means the muscles work harder without generating as much forward movement. Older participants also produced less push-off power with each step, leading to shorter strides and slower walking speeds. So it's not that you're lazy; your ankle is just staging a coordinated strike against your commute.
Co-author Associate Professor Maarten Immink, Lead of the Active Lives Research Program at Flinders, explains that the nervous system adopts this safety-first approach to compensate for age-related changes. But these changes also increase fatigue and make walking longer distances more challenging, while reducing the ability to recover from trips or slips - a key factor in falls among older adults. Even gradual changes can affect confidence and independence, and people may notice they tire more quickly or feel less steady, especially on uneven ground. Because nothing says "golden years" like fearing a rogue sidewalk crack.
The findings also offer hope: rather than just building strength, exercise programs should emphasize balance and coordination, paying attention to how different muscles work together during each step. Dr. Lindsay suggests simple actions for older Australians, including regular physical activity, balance exercises like tai chi, lower-leg strengthening, and activities that challenge coordination. "Staying active is one of the most important things people can do, and small, consistent exercises can help you stay confident, mobile and independent for longer," he says. The researchers hope these findings contribute to better prevention and rehabilitation strategies to reduce falls and support healthy aging - because nobody wants to be grounded by their own ankles.
