A 13-year-old girl in Michigan has been hailed as a hero after surviving four gunshot wounds in a shooting spree that left six people dead - including the suspected gunman - and then, you know, calling 911 herself. Because when you're bleeding out, why not add 'emergency operator' to your resume?

The teen, whose name hasn't been released, was in critical condition when first responders rushed her to a hospital, but by Saturday she was stable, according to police. She reportedly called 911 to report that she'd been shot at one of three crime scenes, which is impressive given that most of us would be too busy panicking to remember our own phone number.

State police spokesperson Lt. Ashley Miller told NBC News that investigators quickly identified the suspected shooter, Chad Hickman, 39, who allegedly killed five people across three locations in Michigan's Missaukee County. Hickman was later found dead next to a shooting victim in a wooded area after a manhunt. Police didn't release the victims' names or their relationship to the shooter as of Saturday, but they did describe the slain as a teenage boy and four adults.

A relative, in a Facebook post, identified two of the victims as 40-year-old Amanda Everitt and her 16-year-old son, Eric. David Everitt, Amanda's father and Eric's grandfather, wrote that "this world just lost two beautiful people and one is clinging to life." He asked for prayers for his granddaughter, the 13-year-old, "who while shot 4 times still managed to call 911 and identify the shooter." That's right, folks: four bullets, one phone call, zero time for drama.

At the first scene, police found the bodies of a 16-year-old boy, a 45-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman, and the 13-year-old girl in critical condition. A 53-year-old victim was found at a second home, and a 29-year-old woman and Hickman were found dead next to each other in the woods. Investigators couldn't immediately determine whether Hickman died by suicide, with an autopsy pending. All died of gunshot wounds, because of course they did.

Hickman had been convicted in 2024 of misdemeanor fourth-degree child abuse and sentenced to one year in prison, stemming from a complaint filed by his ex-wife, Katie, who initiated divorce in September 2023. Because nothing says 'I've learned my lesson' like a year in prison and then a killing spree.

"This situation is heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved," Miller said, adding that it "has rocked and crushed" the Missaukee community. "They're looking for answers, and they want to know why."

As of Sunday, there have been at least 15 mass murders in the US this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, defined as cases where four or more victims are killed. The vast majority are carried out with firearms, prompting calls from some quarters for more substantial federal gun control. But Congress, in its infinite wisdom, has not enacted such restrictions. Because why would we want to prevent a 13-year-old from having to make that phone call?
