Trump Declares Iran MoU 'Over,' Calls Them 'Scum,' Then Hints Talks Could Continue - Classic
Trump calls Iran 'cuckoo,' declares MoU over, then hints talks might continue - while Iran retaliates against US strikes and oil prices spike. Diplomacy, everyone.
Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Donald Trump declared the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran is “over,” because - and we quote - “I do not want to deal with them any more, they are scum.” He added that Iranians are “sick people,” “vicious, violent people,” “liars,” and, for good measure, “cuckoo.” Despite this emphatic display of diplomacy, Trump noted that negotiations with Tehran can still continue, because nothing says “over” like leaving the door slightly ajar for Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign ministry had already declared the MoU “ineffective,” citing US attacks, revoked oil sanctions waivers, and interference in Hormuz Strait arrangements. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas observed that the exchange of fire between the US and Iran has “complicated” talks to end the war - a masterclass in understatement. She also called Iran’s attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait “unacceptable,” noting they violate Tehran’s commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump also used the summit to air grievances about NATO, specifically over Greenland and the alliance’s refusal to help with Iran. He singled out Spain, calling it a “terrible partner” that doesn’t “participate” or “pay,” and instructed officials to “cut all trade with Spain, including visits.” Because nothing says NATO solidarity like threatening to cut off trade with a fellow member over a summit squabble.
The backdrop: The US launched strikes on Iran Wednesday in response to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran retaliated by targeting 85 US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, and shooting down an MQ-9 drone. The IRGC also reported a member killed in a US drone attack. Oil prices rose 2.5% as markets digested the latest round of “ceasefire” activity. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called the US strikes “absolutely necessary,” because when a ceasefire is violated, the logical response is more strikes.
