In a stunning turn of events that absolutely no one saw coming, Lorena Wiebes won the opening stage of the Tour de France Femmes 2026, taking the yellow jersey and adding yet another trophy to her already groaning mantelpiece. The Dutch sprinter, who now has over 130 professional victories, crossed the line in Lausanne in 3hr 29min 11sec, with a 10-second time bonus for her trouble.

Wiebes, riding for SD Worx-Protime, outsprinted a field that included the pre-race favourite Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez), who had to settle for third place with a 4-second bonus. Kim Le Court (AG Insurance - Soudal) took second, with a 6-second bonus. The GC standings after stage one are as tight as a peloton’s lycra, with Wiebes leading Le Court by four seconds.

“I can’t believe it,” Wiebes said, in a display of humility that would make even the most cynical journalist’s heart grow three sizes. “The SD Worx-Protime team worked super-hard … Demi attacked, I thought, I need to follow … it was a super-long sprint.” She added that she was “really happy with the support from the team … and the staff … they really believed in me, even if I had some doubts, and I am super grateful for this.”

The stage, which featured a final climb of 2.5km at an average gradient of 4.6% (a total of 490m of climbing), saw a breakaway of four riders - Nikola Noskova (Cofidis), Océane Mahé (Ma Petite Entreprise), Maud Rijnbeek (Volkerwessels) and Idoia Eraso Lasa (Laboral-Kutxa-Fundacion Euskadi) - eventually swallowed up by the chasing peloton with about 10km to go. Noskova, from Jablonec nad Nisou in Czechia, put up a valiant solo fight after the QOM point, but the sprinters’ teams were having none of it.

There were crashes, as is tradition: Marlen Reusser (Movistar) took a nasty spill on a right-hand downhill bend but, true to pro cyclist form, was back on a bike (possibly a teammate’s) in record time. Mackenzie Coupland (Liv AlUla Jayco) also hit the deck in her Australian national champion’s kit, an unfortunate racing incident that will likely leave some sore bodies in the peloton tomorrow morning.

Océane Mahé secured the polka-dot jersey for the mountains classification, while Wiebes leads the points classification thanks to her stage win. The final general classification standings after stage one are as follows: 1. Lorena Wiebes (SD-Worx), 2. Kim Le Court (AG Insurance - Soudal), 3. Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez), 4. Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Premier Tech), 5. Noemi Ruegg (EF Education-Oatly) and Elisa Longo-Borgini (UAE Team L’Imad) tied, 7. Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon/SRAM), 8. Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (Visma-Lease A Bike), 9. Cedrine Kerbaol (EF Education-Oatly), 10. Marlene Reusser (Movistar).

And so, the Tour de France Femmes 2026 is off to a flying start. Wiebes may have doubted herself, but the results speak for themselves. The race continues tomorrow, and we can only hope for more of the same drama, crashes, and glorious absurdity that makes cycling the beautiful, maddening sport we love.
