Sunderland's European adventure took another turn for the miserable on Thursday night, as they went down 2-0 at home to Dinamo Zagreb. Boos rang around the Stadium of Light at half-time, which is the footballing equivalent of a politely worded but deeply damning performance review.

The Black Cats conceded a powerful finish from Stojkovic and a delicate one from Beljo, while Xhaka picked up a booking for a poor touch followed by a slam of a tackle, and Danso was cautioned for cynically ending a counterattack. Orsic nearly made it 2-0 earlier, only for Meunier to clear off the line. It was, in short, a desperate night.

Meanwhile, Celtic played out a 0-0 draw with Beşiktas, in which Nygren fell over when attempting to shoot from a cute free-kick, and later skewed another effort wide. The Hoops' night was summed up by that particular piece of choreography.

Elsewhere, Getafe and Brighton also finished 0-0, with Hadjam denied a penalty after a tangle of legs (VAR declined to overturn the original rejection), Verbruggen making a smart save, and Hinshelwood curling a shot that was going harmlessly wide until the goalkeeper decided to turn it behind regardless. Football, eh?

There were goals elsewhere: Zeneli equalised for Union Saint-Gilloise in Vigo, while Juventus won at AZ Alkmaar thanks to Koopmeiners and Kolo Muani. Benfica beat Lech Poznan through Rafa, and Pablo Duran netted for Celta Vigo against Union St-Gilloise. Copenhagen beat Iberia 1999 2-1, Lugano thrashed Kauno Zalgiris 3-0, and Monaco edged Nordsjaelland 1-0. Panathinaikos drew 1-1 with CSKA Sofia, Riga beat Jablonec 1-0, Twente lost 0-1 to AE Pafos, and Universitatea Craiova beat Egnatia 2-0.

In the early kick-offs, Crystal Palace rescued a point against Hoffenheim thanks to a late, late strike from Daichi Kamada, who fired home under the keeper after a goalmouth scramble in added time. It saved them from embarrassment and another round of navel gazing, especially after Adam Wharton was dismissed with 13 minutes to go. Hoffenheim had taken the lead in the seventh minute and looked comfortable, but Kamada's deflected shot in stoppage time sent Selhurst Park into rare elation.

Bournemouth cantered to a 3-1 win at Sparta Prague, with Evanilson scoring the second and creating the third for Rayan. Sparta had taken the lead but a red card within a couple of minutes changed the game. Milan lost 0-2 at home to Ferencvaros, while Midtjylland were thrashed 6-1 by Ajax after a floodlight failure delayed kick-off. Hearts lost 3-1 at Thun, though Stuart Findlay headed in a consolation from a free-kick. Lincoln Red Imps took an 89th-minute lead against Hajduk Split, which is the kind of how-the-mighty-have-fallen story we all enjoy.

And in case you were wondering, Hoffenheim are currently 12th in the Bundesliga and many Germans are praying for their downfall, according to one reader. The more you know.
