In a move that will surprise absolutely no one who has been paying attention to the transfer window, Arsenal have agreed to pay Newcastle £75m for Bruno Guimarães, with the Brazilian midfielder set to swap the sun-soaked training pitches of southern Spain for a medical in north London. Because nothing says 'title contenders' like overpaying for a player who turns 29 in November and has just two years left on his contract.

The two clubs eventually reached a compromise, with Arsenal initially hoping to pay no more than £60m while Newcastle, in a stunning display of fiscal responsibility, demanded a minimum of £80m. Newcastle, having already flogged Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali to Barcelona and Tottenham respectively, didn't actually need to sell Guimarães, but apparently £75m is enough to make them forget their emotional attachment to a player who was integral to their 2025 League Cup triumph.

Since arriving from Lyon in January 2022, Guimarães has been Newcastle's talisman, with the team struggling to win without him. In 153 league appearances, he scored 30 goals and provided 26 assists, becoming a crowd favourite as the club twice qualified for the Champions League. His departure is likely to sting fans more than Alexander Isak's defection to Liverpool last year, which is saying something.

Guimarães, for his part, was determined to join Arsenal even before Eddie Howe stepped down as manager last week. He flew to La Manga to meet incoming boss Matthias Jaissle on Monday, but told him he wanted out and couldn't be persuaded otherwise. The parting was reportedly cordial, a marked contrast to Isak's acrimonious exit last summer. In other words, everyone is being very adult about this.

Lyon, meanwhile, will receive a nice little windfall of around £7m thanks to a sell-on clause entitling them to 20% of any profit Newcastle make on the sale. Because nothing says 'we're a serious football club' like paying a chunk of your transfer fee to a French team for a player who's been in England for over three years.

Arsenal, having sold Christian Norgaard to Everton for £7m to fund this extravagance, are now expected to turn their attention to signing a defender and another forward. They could face competition from Liverpool for Ezri Konsa, as William Saliba's back issues will keep him out for 'an extended period'. Villa want £60m for the England defender, but Arsenal are balking at the price for a player with less than two years left on his contract. Because apparently £75m for a midfielder is fine, but £60m for a defender is just too much.

The Gunners have also expressed interest in Guimarães' Brazil teammate Vinícius Júnior, but are looking at alternatives should he stay at Real Madrid. Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, is expected to hold talks with Atlético Madrid over Julián Alvarez on Wednesday, but Arsenal are hoping to persuade the 26-year-old to join them instead. And in case that wasn't enough, they've also been linked with PSG's Bradley Barcola, who Liverpool want and who is valued at around £145m by the European champions. Because why not aim for the stars when you've already thrown money at the moon?
