In a move that can only be described as peak 2025, the creators of South Park have announced that the show's new series will be titled 'South America,' a cheeky nod to President Donald Trump's ongoing campaign to rename geographical features after himself. Because if you can't beat them, join them - or at least, satirize them.

"Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA," wrote creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker in a statement, presumably with a straight face and a smirk.

The announcement comes hot on the heels of Trump's executive order in August to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, and his earlier declaration that the Gulf of Mexico shall henceforth be known as the Gulf of America. Apple and Google, ever eager to comply, already updated their Maps apps for US users, setting a precedent for corporate toadying that South Park clearly felt compelled to follow.

The official name change, shared on the show's social media, featured the iconic South Park sign with 'Park' replaced by 'America.' The creators also took a moment to thank their parent company, Paramount - a "Skydance Capitulation," as they so delicately put it.

This jab at Paramount Skydance is timely, given the Trump administration's approval of a $111bn (£82.8bn) merger with Warner Bros Discovery - one of the biggest media deals in history. The merger, however, has been paused until June 2027 after 12 US states filed lawsuits, fearing it would harm competition and lead to higher prices for consumers. Because nothing says 'free market' like a mega-merger that requires a pause for antitrust concerns.

A day before South Park's announcement, Trump shared an AI-generated video of himself placing the word 'America' over 'Mexico' on a 'Welcome to New Mexico' sign. Because if you can't rename a whole country, at least you can rename a state - via deepfake.

The show, now in its 29th season, has been a thorn in Trump's side since it began in 1997. Stone and Parker have faced criticism from Trump, the White House, and MAGA supporters for their relentless satire. During the 27th season, the White House dismissed South Park as a 'fourth-rate' show 'hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention,' after an episode depicted Trump naked in bed with Satan. Clearly, they're doing something right.

After winning an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program on Sunday, South Park shared an image of a fictionalized Trump with the words: 'You finally got your Emmy.' The new season premieres on 16 September. Will it be called 'South America'? Only time will tell, but we're sure it will be anything but subtle.
