This nebula, as it turns out, is the remnant of a Sun-like star that simply couldn't keep up with the nuclear fusion demands of its core - a relatable feeling for anyone who's ever faced a Monday morning. The star shed its outer layers of gas and dust, forming this planetary nebula, while a hot stellar core, known as a white dwarf, remains tucked inside the lion's nose. Astronomers advise against booping this particular nose, as the white dwarf's intense radiation is ionizing the expanding gas, creating the irregular bubble that forms the lion's face. Meanwhile, dust clumps that have somehow survived the radiation and a cloud of ionized gas make up the lion's mane. This new, more detailed view is expected to help humanity understand how gas and dust interact with each other and with white dwarf radiation - because apparently, we needed a lion-shaped object in the sky to figure that out.
