In a move that will shock absolutely no one who has ever looked at a grocery receipt, a 'social supermarket' offering low-cost food and support to escape financial hardship is set to open at a third location in Kent.

SE Kitchen is scheduled to open its doors at the Pentagon Shopping Centre in Chatham this October, joining existing branches in Ashford and Ramsgate. Because nothing says 'we live in a society' quite like needing a dedicated supermarket for people who can't afford regular ones.

The shops, operated by Social Enterprise Kent, cleverly redistribute surplus food and offer cut-price groceries. It's almost as if food waste and food poverty could be addressed simultaneously - who knew?

Rebecca Smith, chief executive of the community interest company, struck a hopeful tone: 'We pride ourselves on creating a supportive, inclusive space where people can access what they need today while building a more stable, sustainable future.' Translation: we're here to help, and we're not going anywhere.

The Chatham location will be open to all Medway residents, with no referral or membership required. That's right - no secret handshake, no proving you're poor enough. Just walk in and get affordable food. Revolutionary.

But wait, there's more. The shop will also offer 'wrap-around support designed to address the root causes of financial hardship,' according to Medway Council. Because handing someone a cheap loaf of bread is nice, but helping them figure out why they can't afford the bread in the first place is even nicer.

Teresa Murray, the council's deputy leader, noted that access to affordable and healthy food was 'critically important' and a key factor in people's well-being. Groundbreaking stuff, really. 'Being able to put this new community supermarket in the heart of Chatham... is fantastic and will undoubtedly support the wider work we are undertaking,' she added, presumably while resisting the urge to point out that it shouldn't take a 'social supermarket' to feed people.

In related news, a church's energy bill quadrupled over new fridges, and a social supermarket reportedly 'helps me to afford Christmas.' Because in 2023, that's the world we live in.
