Conor McGregor Wants ‘Last Dance’ Rematch with Max Holloway in 2027, Because Apparently Time Heals All Wounds (and Torn ACLs)
Conor McGregor, fresh off a 69-second loss and a torn ACL, announces a rematch with Max Holloway in 2027, because apparently the only thing longer than his losing streak is his recovery timeline.
Conor McGregor, a man who has not won a fight since 2020 and whose last bout lasted all of 69 seconds before his knee gave out, is already planning his next move: a rematch with Max Holloway in 2027, which he has dubbed “The Last Dance.” Because nothing says final farewell like scheduling a fight four years in advance.
McGregor announced on Instagram Monday that he wants to reset what he called “a generational beating” at UFC 329 on July 11, where Holloway won by technical knockout after McGregor injured his right knee on an early kick. The injury, a torn anterior cruciate ligament, will require surgery, which likely explains why McGregor is giving himself until 2027 to recover. That, and the fact that he’s lost three straight fights and four of his last five.
This would be the third meeting between the two fighters. McGregor won their first bout by unanimous decision in 2013, back when he was still the UFC’s golden boy. Now, at 38, the Irishman is more known for multiple lawsuits, an aborted run for the Irish presidency, and aligning with hard-right figures than for his fighting prowess.
UFC president Dana White confirmed on Sunday that McGregor is “out for a year,” despite McGregor posting an Instagram video of himself doing leg exercises. Because nothing says “ready to fight” like a video of leg exercises while your ACL is torn.
Holloway, 34, of Honolulu, dropped a unanimous decision to Charles Oliveira at UFC 326 in March before bouncing back to defeat McGregor. He now has to wait until 2027 for a chance to do it again, assuming McGregor’s knee - or his legal troubles - don’t intervene.
