Two Mass Shootings in One Weekend, Because America's Calendar Apparently Has a Recurring Appointment
A weekend of gun violence in Georgia and Baltimore leaves three dead, including a 12-year-old girl, because apparently parking disputes and block parties are now high-stakes combat zones.
In a weekend that will surprise absolutely no one who has been paying attention to the United States, two mass shootings left three people dead - including a 12-year-old girl - and dozens more injured across Georgia and Maryland.
In Vienna, Georgia, two people were killed and at least 25 others injured when gunfire erupted at a homecoming block party early Sunday morning. Sheriff Craig Peavy told local outlet WMAZ that the gathering had drawn more than 1,000 people, because nothing says "community celebration" like a crowd large enough to require a deputy monitoring detail. Shots were fired at approximately 50 people in two locations about a block apart just after 1am. The two people killed at the scene were not immediately identified, nor were suspects or a possible motive - because who needs answers when you can have thoughts and prayers?
Peavy said about 25 people were taken to the hospital, though as many as 35 may have been wounded. Deputies were monitoring the crowd at the time of the shooting, which is a detail that really underscores the effectiveness of having law enforcement present.
Meanwhile, in Baltimore, a 12-year-old girl was shot and killed and three others wounded after gunfire broke out - allegedly over a parking spot - near a youth football event at Leon Day Park on Saturday. Police Commissioner Richard Worley said two suspects were being sought after two different types of gun cartridges were found at the scene.
"What we know is that there was some type of argument between two cowards, and of course they both opened fire on each other," Worley said at a Saturday night news conference. "The dispute most likely occurred from a stupid parking spot, and they get into a fight, and the two cowards pull guns on each other." Nothing says "I'm a responsible gun owner" quite like a shootout over a patch of asphalt.
The 12-year-old girl was a bystander at a nearby field who was hit when one of the shooters "fired multiple rounds down range." A 25-year-old woman with the girl was also shot, as were two men, ages 23 and 28. None of the three wounded victims were believed to have life-threatening injuries, police said. The 12-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and paramedics took the woman to the hospital. The two other victims walked into a nearby hospital with injuries, presumably because nothing says "healthcare system" like walking off a gunshot wound.
"Two grown men got into an argument, and now a 12-year-old is gone," Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said to reporters. "What happened out here today, is one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen in my life because that baby was just out here, at homecoming for this youth football league is out here every single day, trying to keep young people safe, trying to keep young men and young women on the right path." It's almost as if the "right path" keeps getting blocked by bullets.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonpartisan reference resource, there had been at least 355 mass shootings reported in the US so far for the year as of Sunday - which was the 277th day of 2026. The archive defines mass shootings as cases in which at least four victims are killed or wounded. At this rate, America is on track to hit roughly one mass shooting per day, which is a statistic that would be shocking if it weren't so depressingly routine.
The US perennially has high rates of such shootings, fueling calls from some quarters for more substantial federal gun control. But Congress has not passed such measures over the years - because why start now?
