President Trump has once again set his sights on Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, accusing him of insufficient loyalty to the state's GOP Senate candidate, Ken Paxton. In a Thursday Truth Social post, Trump also dragged Karl Rove - former President George W. Bush's White House adviser - into the fray for supporting a Democrat in a down-ballot Texas race.
"John Cornyn, and his Liddle' Buddy, Super RINO, Karl Rove, are doing everything possible to make it hard for Ken Paxton, the Greatest Attorney General in the History of Texas, and one of the Best in the United States, to win the upcoming Midterm Election against a Radical Left Lunatic," Trump wrote, presumably with a straight face and all caps.
With Trump's endorsement, Paxton ousted Cornyn in a Republican primary runoff in May. Since then, Cornyn has been less than enthusiastic about the man who beat him, speaking out against the Trump administration and pointedly not campaigning alongside Paxton. The senior senator has repeatedly raised concerns about Paxton's candidacy and its impact on the Republican ticket - presumably because of Paxton's numerous scandals and campaign style, which is a polite way of saying "everything."
Trump's post also took aim at state Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic nominee in the Texas Senate race, calling him "the ANTITHESIS of Texas Values." Because nothing says Texas values like a Truth Social post at 6 a.m.
"We cannot take a chance on having a FREAKO, sometimes referred to as James TalaFREAKO, as our man in Washington, D.C., representing the magnificent people of the Great State of Texas!" Trump added, demonstrating his usual commitment to nuanced political discourse.
Republicans are increasingly nervous about losing the Texas Senate race, as most public polls show Talarico leading - albeit narrowly. Nonpartisan election forecaster Decision Desk HQ, a partner of The Hill, gives Talarico a 56 percent chance of victory, which is the kind of number that makes party operatives reach for the antacids.
Trump made clear that if Paxton loses in November, it's Rove and Cornyn's fault. "If Ken Paxton loses, it will be because of WEAK and INEFFECTIVE Political Hacks like John Cornyn and Karl Rove, who have ineffectively opposed me for my entire political career," Trump wrote. Because nothing says "personal responsibility" like preemptively blaming your own party's senator for a loss that hasn't happened yet.
