Russian forces decided to give Kyiv a bit of an extreme makeover overnight, hitting the Ukrainian capital with drones and missiles. The renovations included setting a hotel roof ablaze on the central Shevchenko Boulevard, injuring at least five people, and trapping residents in a nine-storey residential building. Because nothing says 'diplomatic outreach' like ballistic missiles and emergency services.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko, ever the reliable Telegram reporter, confirmed the hotel was on fire and that five people were injured in one of the central districts. Multiple explosions were heard by a Reuters witness, who presumably did not need a Telegram update to figure that out. Meanwhile, residents crowded into underground stations, proving that the Kyiv metro system is still the city's most popular nightclub.

Nato member Poland, not wanting to miss out on the fun, scrambled fighter jets as a preventive measure. The Polish Armed Forces posted on X that the actions were 'aimed at securing and protecting the airspace,' which is a polite way of saying they were ready to tell Russian planes to go home. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had earlier warned of an overnight attack, cut short his stay in Dublin, where he was visiting for the start of Ireland's six-month EU presidency. Apparently, missile attacks are a good excuse to skip a meeting.
