In a speech delivered on Wednesday to mark Nelson Mandela Day, New York's mayor took a break from the usual municipal chaos to reflect on what Madiba can teach us in our current era of fractured everything. The mayor hailed the Nelson Mandela Foundation for its 27 years of insisting that the late leader's legacy belongs not in dusty display cases but in active, ongoing movements for freedom. Madiba, the mayor noted, lives on in every protest, every call for democracy, and every march that has a righteous demand - which is a lot of marches, honestly. He lives in every township and slum where dignity remains stubbornly out of reach, and in every person who, after a long day of work, still finds the energy to bring food to the hungry and medicine to the sick. The mayor concluded that many of us are only where we are today - and can only conceive of the principled as possible - because Madiba showed us the path. So, you know, no pressure.
