Larry David has finally broken his silence on the whole Alan Dershowitz situation, and let's just say he's not pulling any punches - even if he'd prefer to save those for people he thinks he can beat in a fight.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld creator opened up about the collapse of his friendship with the former Harvard University law professor, who has apparently been collecting controversial clients like infinity stones - Trump, Epstein, OJ Simpson, Harvey Weinstein - and served on Trump's defense team during the first impeachment trial in 2020.
For those who missed the earlier drama, reports emerged in 2021 that David and Dershowitz, who were friends and neighbors on Martha's Vineyard for years, had a public argument where David allegedly called Dershowitz "disgusting." Dershowitz later confirmed this to the New Yorker in 2022, recounting the awkward grocery store encounter: "Suddenly, Larry David walks in to buy some groceries. I say, 'Hey. Hi, Larry,' and he turns away, and he just walks away. I say, 'Larry, can't we at least talk?' He said, 'No. You're disgusting.'"
Dershowitz added, "Here's a guy who used to come to our house to work out in the gym. He would come to our house for dinner two or three times a summer." Ah, the classic fall from gym-buddy to "disgusting" - a tale as old as time.
In a new Atlantic profile, David addressed the incident for the first time, with his signature blend of self-awareness and deflection: "I have lots of confrontations on my show but rarely in life. And then only if I think I can take them in a fight. Hence the Dershowitz dust-up." So it's not about principle; it's about knowing you can win a physical altercation. Good to know.
Dershowitz, for his part, expressed hurt that David didn't reach out when his son Elon died from a stroke last year at age 64. David admitted he was "starting to feel a little sorry" for Dershowitz, "certainly because of his son," and said, "I certainly regret not [reaching out]. As I said on Curb once, 'I think of nice things. I just don't act on them.'"
But wait - there's more. The very next day, David called the Atlantic back to add: "I'm loath to say anything mean because he's been so ostracised. But he only has himself to blame. He made a deal with the devil. Literally. And I'd bet the devil hasn't said a word to him since the impeachment." Ouch. That's not just a punchline; that's a whole comedy special.
And because the saga couldn't get any more on-brand, Dershowitz announced in April he was switching to the Republican party after decades of supporting the Democrats, which he labeled the "most anti-Israel party in US history." Then in June, the US Supreme Court turned down his request to revive a $300m defamation lawsuit against CNN over coverage of his remarks while defending Trump, which he claimed were edited to make him look like he "had lost his mind."
So there you have it: a friendship ended over groceries, a deal with the devil (literal, per Larry), and a Supreme Court rejection. Somewhere, Curb Your Enthusiasm is writing itself.
