In what might be the most ambitious group project since the Tower of Babel, Gaza played host to its largest mass wedding yet, with 300 couples tying the knot in a single, sprawling ceremony in Deir al-Balah. The event was funded by the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation as part of the UAE's Operation Gallant Knight 3 - a humanitarian effort that apparently includes matchmaking at scale. The couples were selected from a draw of nearly 2,000 hopefuls, because nothing says 'romance' like a lottery.

One bride, Thekra al-Masri, described the celebration as bringing 'hope for change' for displaced Gazans. Which is nice, because the backdrop includes a fragile ceasefire since last October, following a war triggered by the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023 - when about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 72,560 people, according to the territory's health ministry. On 23 April, at least eight Palestinians, including three children, were killed in two Israeli strikes, according to medics. The Israeli military said it targeted 'a terrorist' who approached troops near the Yellow Line.

Meanwhile, in a separate but equally grim vignette, a burning fuel tanker drove through Hasakah, Syria, leaving a trail of fire. BBC Middle East correspondent Hugo Bachega joined paramedics in Nabatieh, Lebanon - a once-vibrant city now abandoned - as more than a million people have been displaced in Lebanon amid Israel's expanding ground operation. BBC reports from funerals of three journalists killed by a targeted attack in southern Lebanon. Violence began after a teenage settler was killed, reportedly hit by a Palestinian-driven vehicle. Israeli forces were instructed to destroy crossings over the Litani river used by Hezbollah.

In Iran, the war's ripple effects continue: at least 10 people were killed and 27 injured in Lebanon, according to its state-run National News Agency. Iranians spoke about life under constant threat of bombs and regime crackdowns. Displaced Palestinians secured their tents against a storm. Trade at the Middle East's biggest port has been hit hard since Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz began. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper hit back at President Trump's criticism of the UK response. Footage showed flames tearing through a building in the early hours of Sunday following more attacks on the gulf state.

But hey, at least 300 couples got married. Hope, apparently, is a group project.
