WWDC 2026 has come and gone, and while the world was busy marveling at Siri's new AI tricks, Apple quietly slipped a rather significant upgrade into iOS 27: support for Channel Sounding, a Bluetooth feature that promises to make your iPhone's Find My network a little less exclusive.
Channel Sounding, first announced in Bluetooth 6.0 back in the fall of 2024, allows Bluetooth devices to perform precise localization, giving your phone a better sense of where your stuff is - both distance and direction. Thanks to Bluetooth's ubiquity, this could mean your iPhone will soon play nice with third-party headphones, smart locks, trackers, wallets, digital keys, and other location-based peripherals.
But, as with any emerging Bluetooth technology, there are caveats. And they're not small.
The big sell here is democratizing the Find My network. In a perfect world, you'd be able to track any device - regardless of manufacturer - with exact distance and direction in the Find My app. Channel Sounding aims to make that dream a reality. For now, Apple's Find My works best with other Apple devices, specifically those with ultra-wideband (UWB) chips. If you lose your AirPods Pro 3, the Find feature uses UWB chips in both your iPhone and AirPods to pinpoint them. Bluetooth alone gives you general directions, but UWB gives you the precise stuff.
On the other hand, if you misplace your Powerbeats Pro 2, you're stuck with Bluetooth's vaguer guidance, since those lack UWB chips. UWB chips are expensive, and not every manufacturer wants to shell out for them, especially in single-purpose peripherals like headphones or trackers. So, if you want enhanced tracking, you're currently locked into Apple's UWB-equipped ecosystem - certain AirPods and AirTags, for example.
Apple's embrace of Channel Sounding should expand your Find My network, letting Bluetooth fill the gaps for third-party devices that don't have UWB. At WWDC, Apple gave developers guidance on optimizing their Bluetooth peripherals for iPhone, with the requirement that compatible devices must support Bluetooth 6.3.
Here's where the caveats come in. Channel Sounding is only available on iPhones with Apple's N1 networking chip, which is found exclusively in the iPhone 17 lineup. Future iPhones will likely have it or something better.
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (of which Apple is a member) adopted and released Bluetooth 6.3 on May 6, just a month before WWDC. For context, many peripherals manufactured as recently as 2025 support Bluetooth 5.4. So don't expect your next pair of headphones to have Bluetooth 6.3 anytime soon. However, smartphones, smartwatches, trackers, and smart locks tend to adopt new Bluetooth tech faster, especially from multi-category manufacturers like Apple and Google.
But even for the quick adopters, it'll likely be at least a year before we see widespread Channel Sounding on iPhone. So, in the meantime, keep your AirTags close and your Powerbeats wherever you last left them - because your iPhone still won't know exactly where they are.
