Kouri Richins, a Utah mother who wrote a children's book about coping with grief after her husband's death, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole - because she was the one who killed him.

The 35-year-old real estate agent and house-flipper was convicted in March of aggravated murder for lacing her husband Eric's cocktail with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl at their home near Park City in 2022. Judge Richard Mrazik, delivering the sentence on what would have been Eric's 44th birthday, noted that "a person convicted of those things is simply too dangerous to ever be free."

Prosecutors revealed that Richins was millions in debt, planning a future with another man, had secretly taken out multiple life insurance policies on her husband, and falsely believed she'd inherit his $4 million estate. The jury also found her guilty of attempted murder for trying to poison Eric with a fentanyl-laced sandwich weeks earlier on Valentine's Day.

Richins has maintained her innocence, calling the verdict "an absolute lie." Her case captivated true-crime enthusiasts when she was arrested in 2023 while promoting her book "Are You With Me?" - a story about a boy coping with his father's death.

Eric's sister, Amy Richins, expressed relief after the verdict, saying the family can now focus on supporting his three sons, who were aged nine, seven, and five when their father died. The oldest boy, now 13, told the judge he fears his mother would "come after me and my brothers" if released. The middle child, now 11, said he can now "live a happy and successful life without fear" of his mother. The youngest said he'd be "so scared" if she got out.

The trial ended early when Richins waived her right to testify and her legal team rested without calling witnesses. Prosecutors presented text messages with her lover fantasizing about leaving her husband, plus internet searches for lethal fentanyl doses, luxury prisons, and how poisoning appears on death certificates.
