In a move that surely shocked absolutely no one who has been paying attention, Tanzania's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party has expelled Vice-President Emmanuel Nchimbi for "indiscipline." The 54-year-old had the audacity to resign earlier this week after just 10 months on the job, and apparently, the party didn't take it lying down.
Nchimbi, who has been making waves with controversial remarks lately - including telling Tanzanians to "fight for a new constitution" - has been shown the door. It's almost as if suggesting a new constitution might ruffle some feathers in high places. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who chaired the extraordinary CCM meeting that made the decision, clearly wasn't amused.
But wait, there's more! Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi, 43, has been nominated as Nchimbi's replacement, and his name will be presented to parliament for approval. The party, ever transparent, did not provide details on the specific indiscipline allegations. Nchimbi's resignation takes effect at the end of next week, giving him just enough time to pack his bags.
Nchimbi, who shared his resignation letter on Instagram (because where else do you announce such things in 2025?), is the first vice-president in Tanzania's history to step down. He cited a "conviction, without doubt, that the president wants changes" as his reason to retire from public life. Well, at least he's honest.
For context, Samia and Nchimbi were sworn in last November after winning a whopping 98% of the vote in an election that the main opposition party, Chadema, boycotted, demanding electoral reforms. The post-election unrest was, to put it mildly, a disaster: at least 500 people died, according to an official inquiry, and opposition parties and human rights groups accused security forces of a brutal crackdown. But hey, at least the party's internal discipline is being enforced.
So, as Tanzania navigates yet another political shakeup, one can't help but wonder: will Ndejembi last longer than 10 months? And more importantly, will he remember to update his Instagram followers?
