Philadelphia shoegaze outfit They Are Gutting a Body of Water have announced a new mixtape so sprawling it might need its own zip code. Kool Faith / Loosies II arrives digitally on October 16 and physically on November 20 via ATO/Julia's War, and it packs 29 songs' worth of collaborations with Spirit of the Beehive, Hotline TNT, RXK Nephew, and dozens more. Because nothing says "intimate DIY project" like a guest list that could fill a mid-size venue.

For the impatient, three new songs are already out: "Kool Marder" featuring Cashier, "The Rook," and "Free Willy." The full tracklist awaits below, presumably for those who like to study liner notes the way other people study stock portfolios.

The release corrals a veritable who's-who of the band's fellow DIY shoegaze rockers, several labelmates on Julia's War, and various artists in their orbit: Greg Mendez, Horse Jumper of Love, FearDorian, Full Body 2, LUCY (Cooper B. Handy), Options, Dead Sullivan, Cooking, Hooky, A Country Western, Total Wife, Fib, Scarlet Rae, Toner, Haloplus, Morgan Garrett, and more. That's not a mixtape; that's a group chat that learned to play guitar.

Bandleader Doug Dulgarian offered a succinct history of the format: "The word mixtape initially meant a homespun tape that you typically listened to yourself or gave to somebody else. For me who was born later, it meant mashups of all my favorite artists by local DJs. And so that's what I did with this one, mashups of all my favorite artists. Shoutout DJ WHITEOWL, RIP." A fitting tribute, and a reminder that "mixtape" has always been a flexible term - much like "album" when you don't want to call it an album.

They Are Gutting a Body of Water released their most recent album, Lotto, last October - a record that landed in The 30 Best Rock Albums of 2025. Next month, the band heads out on a headlining tour of the United States that runs through December. So if you've been waiting for a 29-track mixtape to justify a cross-country road trip, congratulations: your moment has arrived.
