In a tragic incident that underscores the importance of not conducting roof repairs while children are studying underneath it, 14 children died after the roof of a private tuition centre collapsed in the Kahna suburb of Lahore, Pakistan. The victims, mostly between seven and 11 years old, were taking lessons when the roof gave way at 16:45 local time. Rescue 1122 completed the operation within an hour, recovering most of the deceased and five injured individuals. Authorities have launched an investigation and taken two people into custody. A relative of one victim, Zaheer, 45, told AFP the roof had been "in poor shape" and that tiles were being repaired while children studied. "Suddenly the roof collapsed on top of quite a few children," he said, adding that "they put a lot of weight on the roof." Another resident lamented not knowing "whose home to visit first" to offer condolences. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolences and directed authorities to provide medical assistance, while Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif called it a "heartbreaking tragedy" and vowed that "every individual found accountable will face the full force of the law."
