Kraków Shooting Kills Six, Injures Sixteen; Authorities Confirm Terrorism, Far-Right Ideology, and a Distinctly Unhelpful Online Rumor Mill
Six dead, sixteen injured, and a gunman with far-right views - authorities confirm terrorism while politely asking the internet to stop making things up.
Polish police chief Marek Boron confirmed Saturday that six people were killed in the shooting in Kraków: four women and two men - three Polish women, one British national, and two victims who have not yet been identified. Sixteen people were injured, including the suspect, and five of the wounded are non-Polish nationals, according to interior minister Marcin Kierwiński. Among the injured is a Portuguese woman, Portugal's foreign ministry said. So, an international incident, then.
Prime minister Donald Tusk called the attack an act of "terrorism." "Until now in Poland we haven't had such drastic cases of terrorism," he told reporters in Kraków, adding: "That's what we have to call this cruel attack on people's lives here in Kraków." He also warned against disinformation circulating online, presumably because the internet's first response to a tragedy is always a refreshing burst of unverified speculation. He thanked police for their swift response, saying they "saved many people's lives." Police chief inspector Marek Boroń confirmed armed officers responded within three minutes of the first report. Two officers were seriously injured and remain in hospital, praised for their "heroic" actions.
The suspected gunman is a 25-year-old Polish man with "ultranationalistic" views, Kierwiński said, noting that "everything points to the fact that the shooter was influenced by far-right ideology, a matter that will also be subject to investigation." Police spokesperson Andrzej Fijolek told TVN 24 the assailant used an AR-15 rifle and had a firearms licence. Defence minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz rejected reports the gunman was a soldier, stating: "The man was not and is not a soldier in the Polish Armed Forces and has never had anything to do with the military." So that's one rumor officially quashed, at least.
Tusk also revealed that the bodies of two women and one man - most likely family members of the gunman - were found dead inside his house, discovered via drone footage from above the home. The bodies were found after the shooting, in which the gunman fired from a car in the heart of the southern city. A 67-year-old witness named Julek told Reuters he saw a dark car appear suddenly before the driver started shooting at a group of people and drove off. "If we had been two minutes earlier, we might have been shot," he said. Another witness, Konrad, told Interia: "I saw shots being fired from the driver's side window, and smoke was coming out. I ran to the police station in the main market square; when I burst inside, it was full of people hiding on the floor."
Poland will observe two days of national mourning on Sunday and Monday, Tusk said. Kraków mayor Łukasz Gibała declared the city in official mourning until Wednesday but vowed Kraków will remain open to visitors. "The square will belong to us again," Gibała said in a video posted to X. UK prime minister Andy Burnham wrote on X: "I'm shocked and saddened by the appalling shooting in Kraków today. My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives, everyone injured and all those affected by this senseless violence. The United Kingdom stands in solidarity with the people of Poland." Tusk added on X: "My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of the tragic attack in Kraków. The highest praise for the heroic police officers who risked their lives. And a heartfelt appeal to politicians of all stripes: do not exploit this tragedy. We will establish all the circumstances of this crime." A plea that, historically, has a mixed success rate.
