Google Finally Brings Gemini to CarPlay, Only a Year After Everyone Else
Google's Gemini finally arrives in Apple CarPlay a year after Android Auto, bringing multi-step navigation questions to iPhone users - minus the Personal Intelligence features announced yesterday.
Google has announced that its Gemini AI assistant is now available in Apple CarPlay, roughly a year after it first showed up in Android Auto. The conversational navigation feature launches today for US drivers, with Google saying a "rollout happening globally too" is underway - and that vague phrasing is doing a lot of heavy lifting while the company presumably works out which countries count as "global."
The pitch is straightforward enough: CarPlay users can now talk to the voice assistant inside Google Maps for hands-free help while driving. That includes multi-step questions - for example, asking for recommendations on places to visit and then telling it to navigate there while avoiding toll roads. To activate it, users tap the Gemini icon in Google Maps on their car's infotainment display, which is a refreshingly simple instruction for a feature that took almost 12 months to cross the platform divide.
Google frames the CarPlay update as a conversational way to report traffic disruptions and find information about stops and places on the go. What Google does not mention is any of the Personal Intelligence features announced yesterday for Gemini in Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in - the ones that let the assistant pull user information from Google apps including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search. Whether CarPlay users will get that personalization update remains an open question, and Google has been asked. We'll update if we hear back, which is journalism-speak for "we'll see."
So to recap: Android Auto got Gemini first, CarPlay gets it a year later, the global rollout is happening "too" in some unspecified sense, and the fancy personalization features are staying home for now. Apple users are surely thrilled to be treated as a second-class citizen in Google's own navigation app.
