Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House judiciary committee, has launched an investigation into FIFA president Gianni Infantino, demanding documents detailing the cozy relationship between soccer’s governing body and Donald Trump and his administration. In a Sunday letter, Raskin requested any communications related to gifts, payments, or benefits provided to Trump and his associates, as well as visitor logs for FIFA’s office in Trump Tower - a space acquired last year. The committee also wants Infantino to sit for a transcribed interview, though they lack the power to compel him (because Democrats don’t control the House).

Infantino’s bromance with Trump has been under scrutiny since the World Cup. At the December draw in Washington, Trump received a newly minted “FIFA peace prize” at the Kennedy Center, where renovations were allegedly rushed on the administration’s orders. FIFA opened its Trump Tower office last July. During the World Cup, Trump called Infantino multiple times to lobby for a review of US striker Folarin Balogun’s red-card suspension - which FIFA dutifully reversed, sparking outrage from other teams. Trump and Infantino also watched the final together in a glassed-in luxury section, greeted by boos from the crowd.

Raskin’s letter references the DOJ’s dismissal of indictments from the 2015 FIFA corruption case, noting that Infantino was supposed to be a “red-card break” from corruption but instead dismantled ethical guardrails. “This lack of transparency has paved the way for you to ingratiate yourself with the Trump administration via tactics described as ‘legal bribery’,” Raskin wrote. He also slammed FIFA’s dynamic pricing for World Cup tickets, calling it a “quid pro quo” that hurts Americans.

The letter gives a deadline of August 9 for documents and the interview. Infantino, meanwhile, posted a 15-part Instagram rant denouncing critics and touting the World Cup’s success. Over 200 FIFA members have endorsed him for re-election in March, but the Norwegian football federation plans to file a formal complaint over Trump’s role in Balogun’s ban. FIFA has been approached for comment - presumably they’re busy polishing the Trump Tower office.
