A German thriller starring Armie Hammer that Germany’s ratings board allegedly deemed too inflammatory for inciting violence against immigrants has found an unlikely savior: Elon Musk, who gave it away for free on X over the weekend. The film, Citizen Vigilante, was posted on Musk’s account from Thursday to Sunday, resulting in a massive boost to its profile and worldwide distribution deal with Quiver Distribution. Musk also teased a sequel, promising “Citizen Vigilante 2 will be even better.”

Director Uwe Boll, frequently called the “worst director of all time,” claims Germany’s FSK rating board denied the film a certificate in a “deliberate censorship decision,” losing a 6-2 vote after being told the film incited violence against migrants. In the film, Hammer plays an American businessman waging vigilante violence against criminals in a vague European country, inspired by a 2016 Hamburg gang-rape case. Variety critic Todd Gilchrist called it “a violent, incoherent, morally bankrupt slice of exploitation” that is “so astonishingly bad, it almost feels like [Boll] is deliberately sabotaging his star.”

Boll, who has directed over 30 films including notoriously terrible video game adaptations Postal and BloodRayne, said Musk contacted his podcast to request the film. “I didn’t really chat myself with him… his attention went like fast,” Boll told Variety, adding that if they hadn’t agreed, Musk “would’ve just moved on.” The film also courted controversy by casting Hammer, who faced accusations of rape and abuse in 2021, though LA authorities declined to prosecute. Boll was also forced to change the original title from The Dark Knight after a “friendly conversation” with Warner Bros.
