Amazon has filed an FCC application to launch a new constellation of 5,105 low-Earth orbit satellites that will provide direct-to-device service for “voice, messaging, data, and emergency services.” If approved, deployment begins in 2028, with Amazon partnering with mobile network operators - a model that sounds suspiciously like Starlink’s deal with T-Mobile, but we’re sure it’s a completely original idea.

Earlier this year, Amazon announced it’s acquiring Globalstar’s satellite network and taking over its deal to provide direct-to-device services for Apple devices. The new constellation will “use Globalstar’s spectrum,” and Amazon plans to “collaborate with Apple on future satellite services using the expanded network.” Because nothing says collaboration like one tech giant buying another company’s infrastructure. Advanced Television notes the FCC application also requests use of Iridium’s spectrum outside the US, even as Rocket Lab is in the process of acquiring Iridium with expansion plans.

The new constellation will “complement” Amazon’s broadband services via its Leo platform, and will also be used for disaster response and emergency messaging - you know, just in case your regular cell tower is down and you need to order more emergency supplies from Amazon.

Amazon says the direct-to-device satellites “will process the signals in orbit before relaying them to improve performance.” The new constellation will be nearly double the size of Amazon’s initial Leo constellation (planned at ~3,200 satellites), of which “over 375” have launched as of July 2nd. So, just 4,730 more to go. No big deal.
