In a development that feels like it should be more surprising than it is, a man was arrested after making what authorities called a "credible threat" toward the Texas State Capitol. Governor Greg Abbott (R) confirmed the arrest Wednesday evening, presumably after finishing his afternoon coffee and checking his mentions.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that law enforcement had stopped a plot targeting the state's capitol building in Austin. According to DPS, they had obtained a credible threat of an attack planned for Thursday - which, if you're keeping score, is the kind of thing that makes Wednesday a very busy day for everyone involved.
The suspect, identified as Benny Caldera Jr., 40, was arrested in the San Antonio area early Wednesday morning. DPS said it had collaborated with the FBI to investigate the threat's credibility before making the arrest, which is the government's way of saying they did their homework before knocking on someone's door.
Per an arrest warrant affidavit, Caldera's friend told DPS officers that the man "had made verbal threats to assault the Texas State Capitol Building," NBC reported. Nothing says "I have a solid plan" like telling your friend about it, apparently.
Abbott took to X to announce the news, writing, "Texas DPS and the FBI stopped a planned attack on the Texas Capitol." He added, "Texas will NOT tolerate threats of violence against our Capitol," before thanking DPS for its response. The all-caps "NOT" really drove the point home, in case anyone was confused about the state's stance on violence.
According to arrest documents obtained by NBC, Caldera reportedly told his friend he had anger toward the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), allegedly adding, "These people have to be exterminated." The investigation into the threat's specifics is ongoing, but the arrest itself has been made, which is the part that matters most to the people who work at the Capitol.
