Sirius Academy West in Hull has kicked off its summer of uniform scrutiny with a 'uniform approval day,' where trousers and skirts get the coveted green sticker of approval before the new school year begins. Because nothing says 'ready for learning' like a bureaucratic pre-check on your child's waistline.
Mark, whose daughter is heading into Year 7, called the move 'loads better' than the usual September chaos. 'It's all stuff like this that causes hassle at the beginning of the year... [It] puts kids out of sorts, especially at the start when they should be progressing, gaining confidence, instead of getting criticised,' he said, presumably while clutching a freshly stamped pair of black trousers.
The school's social media lays out the dress code with the precision of a military manual: trousers and skirts must be black, and skirts must be made of the same material as blazers, pencil-fit, and sitting just above the knee. Because if there's one thing that fosters academic excellence, it's standardized hem lengths.
Laura, also a parent of a Year 7 starter, appreciated the chance to get non-official trousers checked. 'It's fine if you can afford to buy them off the website, but it's not great when you've not got a lot of money,' she said. 'It is very helpful that they will approve other trousers and stamp them for you.' A stamp of approval: the ultimate fashion accessory for the budget-conscious.
Cheryl found the drop-in session times a tad inconvenient, but she sees the logic. 'It's a little bit of a faff, but I can see why they're doing it if it's such an important thing that they've got to have it right,' she said. Because nothing says 'important' like policing the exact shade of black.
The BBC has reached out to the school for comment, presumably to ask why this wasn't a thing decades ago. In related news, parents everywhere are wondering if they can get a green sticker for their sanity.
