Five people have died in an Ohio river after a chain reaction of altruism went horribly wrong. A group had gathered on Sunday along the Scioto River in the Columbus suburb of Powell when one person went in for a swim. That's when, as Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer put it, "the tragedy started to occur." The others jumped in to help the struggling swimmer, only to find themselves in need of help too. A motorist called 911 after spotting a frightened child from the group running on a nearby road. Rescue crews found two women on Sunday, pronounced dead at a hospital; the bodies of three men were found on Monday. Two children under age 10 have been placed in the care of family services, including the child who ran for help. The incident comes two days after a separate tragedy in Utah, where a flash flood killed five family members on a hiking trip. It seems the universe has a grim sense of symmetry.
