Microsoft Finally Lets Azure Revenue Out of the Basement, Splits Itself Into Two Weirdly Named Halves
Microsoft is simplifying its financial reports to two segments and will finally spill the beans on Azure's quarterly revenue, because AI made everything too complicated.
In a move that will thrill investors who enjoy reading numbers and mildly confuse everyone else, Microsoft is overhauling how it reports its finances. The company is consolidating its three business segments into two - 'Agents and Infra' and 'Devices and Consumer' - and, for the first time ever, will disclose Azure's quarterly revenue on a regular basis. Because why keep a mystery when you can just show the receipts?
The old structure - Productivity and Business Processes, Intelligent Cloud, and More Personal Computing - is being retired. In its place, 'Devices and Consumer' will hoover up search and advertising revenue from LinkedIn, Xbox, Windows OEM, and devices. Meanwhile, 'Agents and Infra' is essentially everything else, including Azure, Microsoft 365 Cloud, server products, industry solutions, and those enterprise services now rebranded as 'frontier and support services' - because 'tech support' sounded too pedestrian.
CEO Satya Nadella, never one to miss a chance to speak in grand pronouncements, said, 'There's no question AI represents a profound shift in both technology and business. It is changing what we build and how we operate, and it is blurring the boundaries between our products and reshaping our business models.' So, yes, AI is a big deal, and Microsoft's accounting will now reflect that in the most exciting way possible: financial disclosures.
The headline change is Azure's quarterly revenue finally coming out of the shadows. Microsoft had only been giving year-over-year growth rates, and last year offered a one-time revenue figure. Now, Azure will be reported as a more pure play, excluding GitHub cloud, other developer services, Security Copilot, and Healthcare and Life Sciences cloud revenues. Nadella explained, 'Under this reporting structure, Azure becomes more purely our consumption-based platform and infrastructure business.' And for those who want even more numbers, he added, 'Within each of these segments, you will have full transparency of quarterly revenue across each of our key businesses, including Azure, M365 Cloud, industry solutions, and ads.'
These changes kick in with Microsoft's first quarter fiscal 2027 earnings in late October. Mark your calendars for a truly riveting earnings call.
