Melissa Auf der Maur, former Hole bassist and touring Smashing Pumpkins member, is back with her first new album in 16 years - or at least a lovingly curated collection of old demos plus new bits. The album,

Bass Womb Room: My ’90s 4-Track Demos x Field Recordings, digs up unreleased living-room recordings from the 1990s and layers in eight new interludes composed for a photography exhibition. Those interludes are built partly from field recordings Auf der Maur made by strapping a handycam to her amp during her Hole and Pumpkins days. The whole thing drops digitally and on cassette September 4 via Envision. You can hear a teaser of new track “Skip a Beat” now.

Auf der Maur explains the demos were her rebellion against major-label pressure to churn out glossy hits: “These songs are the sound of my internal experimentation and a way of keeping the Montreal art girl alive inside. These sounds are the quiet and private side of the girl who joined the big American major label rock band.”

The accompanying photo exhibition, also called Bass Womb Room, opens at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto on September 2, followed by a 240-page photobook on September 8 via DelMonico Books/D.A.P. and the AGO. The title, she says, refers to the bass guitar as “the mother of all instruments.”

The album follows her March memoir Even the Good Girls Will Cry: A ’90s Rock Memoir. Her last solo album was 2010’s Out of Our Minds.
